Why More Australians Are Exploring SMSFs

by | Aug 26, 2026 | Superannuation

Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) continue to attract growing interest from Australians who want greater control over their retirement savings. According to Australian Taxation Office statistics, there were more than 672,000 SMSFs with almost 1.24 million members by March 2026, managing over $1 trillion in assets. This growth highlights a shift in how many Australians are thinking about their long-term wealth and retirement planning

One of the main attractions of an SMSF is control. Unlike industry or retail super funds, where investment decisions are made by professional fund managers, SMSF trustees can choose their own investment strategy. This flexibility allows members to invest in shares, managed funds, commercial property, cash and other approved assets that align with their personal financial goals.

Many small business owners are also drawn to SMSFs because they may enable the fund to own the premises from which the business operates, creating opportunities for long-term wealth accumulation within a tax-effective superannuation environment. Additionally, families often appreciate the ability to tailor investment and estate planning strategies to suit their specific circumstances.

Another trend is the increasing number of younger Australians establishing SMSFs. Recent industry and ATO data indicates that new SMSF members are becoming younger, with a significant proportion under age 50. This suggests that many Australians are becoming more engaged with their superannuation earlier in life and are seeking greater involvement in investment decisions.

However, an SMSF is not suitable for everyone. Greater control brings greater responsibility. Trustees must manage compliance obligations, maintain records, implement an investment strategy, arrange annual audits and ensure the fund complies with superannuation laws

For Australians willing to take an active role in managing their retirement savings, an SMSF can provide flexibility, control and opportunities that may not be available through traditional superannuation funds. As always, professional advice should be sought to determine whether an SMSF is the right fit for your personal circumstances.
